Living the restaurant life, I literally eat all day long....whether its tasting things, or grabbing a quick bite with my fellow chefs and friends. You would think after working 10hrs in a restaurant kitchen I wouldn't be hungry anymore right? WRONG! This never ending food curiosity lead me across the street after work one night to the infamous La Esquina restaurant. Known for the tacos and celeb sitings, I didn't go in the actual restaurant, located downstairs.....I just grabbed a quick bite at the taqueria they have attached, thats open 24hours.(Gotta LOVE NYC!) It was crowded and no seats at the window, which is always a great sign...even at 12:45am! I've never been there before so glancing over the menu, something caught my eye instantly! I immediately ordered the Lengua taco.....Veal Tongue, salsa verde, pickled onions, cilantro, jalepeno, queso fresco, and black beans on a soft corn tortilla. I have never had tongue of any kind...seen it cooked before... but I was NOT going to pass this up! I also ordered the Tinga de Pollo taco(stewed pulled chicken, avocado, shredded cabbage, chipotle salsa) and a mexican soda(mango), but once I taste the veal tongue taco, that chicken one didn't stand a chance. From what my "chef's eye" saw, it was half of a veal tongue, with perfectly charred grill marks. I taste the tongue first and it was amazing! A little fatty, a little chewy..and somehow rich in flavor and texture, but the pickled onions, offset that perfectly. Never having tongue before, theres a lesson to be learned here.....curiosity might lead you to eat amazing new things. GO EAT!
