Why I Decided to go NATURAL

I had a long conversation with my Sister the other night about being Natural. While her story was a lot more compelling than mine, I’d like to share why I am Natural.
MY HAIR WAS UNHEALTHY.
No, I was not trying to make a statement. No, I wasn’t trying to reach a higher level of consciousness. No, I wasn’t trying to hop on a trend.
My hair simply was falling off my scalp.
I would complain over and over again to my boyfriend about how my hair was breaking off, how dry and brittle it was, how much I hated smelling my hair burning everyday from curling irons, flat irons, and blow dryers and he would say to me plain as day, “do something about it”.
So on Saturday, September 27, 2008, I woke up, stood in the mirror and watched myself clip years of dead ends off my hair. I cried for a few seconds, put a headband on and snapped a picture. I wanted to treasure that moment forever. It was transformational period where I learned to love myself - my bushy eyebrows, my slightly lazy right eye, my dimpled chin…
It started with a seemingly selfish purpose but became so much more than that to me. With natural hair came confidence that I never could have imagined. Discovery and acceptance, and I always encourage friends to do it if they are considering it even slightly. It is quite a liberating experience.
Do I miss my permed hair? Of course I do! I miss not having to twist my hair every other day into the wee hours of the night. I miss not having to deep condition once a week. I miss not having baskets full of products. But that is the true joy of being natural. The experimentation. The versatility. Again, the discovery.
Almost four years natural and I don’t regret a single day of it. The reasons I did it evolved into so much more, and the journey has been one I will carry eternally.
What were your reasons for going natural?

OUTFIT: All-Star

I’ve been enjoying my Spring Break this week, and with such wonderful weather here in NYC, Tineey and I took a trip to Jersey City to get some shopping done. I got this Patricia Field All-Star jacket a couple of months ago, and today was the perfect time to wear it. I tried to keep my feminine edge by pairing the jacket, tee, and jeans with a pair of slingback kitten heels. Smart, eh?

I have also been toying with the idea of “matchy-matchy”. Earlier this week, a girlfriend convinced me to buy Wet N’ Wild’s Megalast lipstick in Purty Persimmon, and I am completely attached to it now.

Hello Spring, we barely missed you!
Jacket: Patricia Field
Jeans: Ashley Stewart
Bag: Lulu’s
Necklace: Spring Shoes

Dior Cosmetics x Harper's Bazaar

I stopped by Macy's with Tineey for a Dior Cosmetics makeover courtesy of Harper's Bazaar. I came in with the Wet N' Wild Megalast Purty Persimmon on, and my artist actually gave me a makeunder! When all was said and done, I purchased the Dior Skinflash Radiance Booster Pen (which I ultimately ended up returning lol - fun while it lasted!).

butter LONDON launches LIPPY Collection

Everyone's favorite eco-friendly nail lacquer brand, butter LONDON, has launched a new line of lip glosses, sold exclusively via Ulta Beauty. The collection adheres to the "matchy-matchy" trend seen backstage at most SS 2012 fashion shows which is great because I'm good for matchy-matchy. The look is making a comeback in a fresh way, with fashionistas being SUPER intentional about it all (I like to pair matching nails and lip with an accessory).

LIPPY features five butter LONDON shades - Primrose Hill Picnic, Snog, Trout Pout, Teddy Girl and Yummy Mummy.

FYI - LIPPY products, just like butter LONDON lacquers, are eco-friendly. They don't contain parabens, petroleum, phthalates, sulfates, or bismuth. Glosses retail at $17 a pop.

Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Haul

My beautiful friend Stephanie and I went to a taping of "What Not To Wear: LIVE" last week, and one of our gifts for being such a patient audience participant (TEN HOURS, geez!) was a full collection of cosmetics from Sally Hansen Natural Beauty inspired by Carmindy of WNTW.

Of all the pieces, I am very fond of the Forever Stay Lip Gloss in Creamsicle. It is just the right sheer shade for my skin tone, and is pretty moisturizing. I'd only apply with a base though.

St. Patrick's Day Hair.

St. Patty's Day hair: a braid-out on damp hair using Nature's Blessing Pomade. This product is one of the BEST for natural hair, full of natural ingredients - nettle, rosemary, sage, peppermint, thyme, alfalfa, pure virgin olive oil, pure coconut oil...and the list goes on and on. My hair is always extremely soft when I use Nature's Blessing. I absolutely recommend this product for a soft mane.

Ashley Nell Tipton Designs

Designer on the rise, Ashley Nell Tipton, is the epitome of inspiration. At the ripe age of 20 years old, she has traveled the world and excited the plus-size industry with five looks that gave us something to talk about.

Tipton describes her line as the "artful combination of glamour and street...a full-figure collection  for a 20-30 something female that is chic with a rocker edge".

I am SO crazy for the high-waisted pants and the billowy cape blouses. Sheers can do no body any wrong, and pops of color take Tipton's simple silhouettes up a notch. Hope to see her at Full Figure Fashion Week!

You can visit Ashley Nell Tipton's site, Facebook, and Twitter.

OUTFIT: Floral Fun

NYC is warming up (upwards of 60 degrees all week, yeah!) so it's time to break out the skin. Coral nails snuck out of peep toes as I slipped into a pair of velvet and glitter heels my sister bought me for Christmas.

Floral prints and stripes are on my IT list this Spring, and I was lucky enough to find this top at a thrift store. Van Heusen is usually known for stuffy businesswear, but this print is fun and flirty. I paired it with an Isaac Mizrahi skirt (also a thrift find, gah!).

And the bag? Katherine Kwei. Something like a traveler pack, but chic. Adore.

REVIEW: Brooklyn Wok Shop

A few weeks ago, I made my way to Brooklyn Wok Shop in Williamsburg. While I'm not usually a Billyburg inhabitant, beau and I decided to make the trek to check out this new restau. Touting vegan and fresh chinese food options, I figured the trip was worth it.

And it was.

We started our meal with Shiu Mai and fried chicken with cinnamon-soy glaze. I am a big fan of experimenting with sauces on my wings so I loved the idea of this glaze. If you enjoy salts, I'd suggest the appetizer; the sauce is heavy of it. I personally do not like my food saliferous, so I waited patiently for the entree.

I opted for the hangar steak with chinese broccoli  - SUCH a home run. I would come back to Brooklyn Wok Shop for this meal alone. The steak was delectable and seasoned perfectly, and the chinese broccoli didn't fall far from the tree with heavenly preparation and a crunch to die for. I'm not a white-rice eater so I didn't enjoy the abundance of it, but it's chinese food right?!

Beau opted for a wonton soup that had the freshest wontons I've EVER eaten. The broth was translucent and fresh, and not as salty as other pieces of the meal, which was refreshing.

For dessert, we enjoyed a traditional egg tart with Chef Edric Har's french culinary twist. The pastry left something to be desired, but I really appreciated the Chef's attention to the technique and the injection of his perspective into the dish.

For shiu mai lovers, Brooklyn Wok Shop will be offering brunch beginning in the warmer months. Not to fall short of sriracha sauce heaven, Brooklyn Wok Shop will shake it up with a Sriracha Martini. I'm SO looking forward to that!

Check out my Yelp review for Brooklyn Wok Shop, their menu (which is quite impressive), and their site. Let me know if you decide to check it out!

OUTFIT: Black & Gold

What started as an easy night out in Union Square turned into some sort of mystical East Village adventure with me, Izzy, and Olu. I knew I would be hanging with the boys, so I tried to keep it casual with a knit sweater and a pair of jeans.
Both the sweater and leather jacket are vintage, from my grandmother of course. I tried to dress up my look with a pair of ankle strap heels from Kate Spade (which you can’t see, but I promise they’re there!).
I found that gold necklace at a Goodwill for $4. It’s Givenchy…and I’m really lucky.

"Break It Off'' by Phony Ppl

My good friend Olu Bliss put me on to Phony Ppl. This Brooklyn collection refers to themselves as “a rap crew, a songwriting/production team, a live band…”. I believe they are so much more.

Phony Ppl is a lifestyle. A group of friends who just groove. The love and the energy they have shines through their music, producing heavy and very honest tracks.

“Phonyland” is the title of their latest effort, and they’ve been co-signed by some greats (Q-Tip and Plain Pat, to name two). Phony Ppl has even toured with Theophilus London, one of my all-time favorite performers.
For more of their music, I highly suggest you download “Phonyland” here. No regrets.

H&M + Plus Size Collection

Once I heard from Marie Denee of The Curvy Fashionista that H&M launched an in-store plus size collection, I had to make my way to a location to experience it for myself. While I waited for my beau before a Knicks game, I stopped into the Herald Square H&M store to see what the fuss was about.

I picked up three items, all shirts, that I liked. There weren't very many bottoms outside of slacks and a pair of white jeans to pick from.
  • Khaki and Pink Colorblock shirt ($24.95): This shirt was very comfortable and I could see myself wearing it with a white pair of jeans. Would have been much better if it flared at the bottom. Most women shopping in the plus-size section have wide hips!
  • Gold Metallic Chunky Knit Sweater ($34.95): This was SO comfortable! I picked it up in a size 3X for an oversized effect. I loved, loved, loved this sweater.
  • Lace Shirt with Underlay ($34.95): This shirt was very flattering and the lace was beautiful.
All in all, the H&M + plus size collection has some nice basic pieces. While I do think H&M may have missed the mark on offering trendy, contemporary plus size looks it is certainly a step in the right direction. I would LOVE to see some pieces styled, a lookbook, or a video surrounding this collection!

Please pardon my disgusting nails lol

NYFW: Samantha Black Fall/Winter 2012

During NYFW, Samantha Black (AKA “Sammy B”) presented her Fall/Winter 2012 collection to the masses. Amanda Diva was on the tunes, while Olivia broke up the runway with song. IMAN Cosmetics dolled up the models, including Former ANTM Models Toccara Jones and Nik Pace.
Black’s 30-piece collection “Midnite Lux” left very little to the imagination, replete with sheers and chiffons. A few riche multi-textured pieces made their way into the collection, as did shades of gold.
One of my favorite models, Toccara Jones (who Carmakoma just listed as an inspiration last week) modeled a beautiful chiffon mermaid dress while Nik Pace ripped the runway in a gilded sequin gown.
For more pictures from the presentation, visit the MASQUE Magazine Facebook page.

STYLE I LOVE: Texture Blender

Solange Knowles has easily become the it fashion icon. While she was always a star in my eyes, she is garnering attention from magazines, designers, and fashion fans internationally. She chronicled her style daily for British Vogue, and one trend kept popping up that I absolutely love: chunky knits with lightweight skirts. She had an interview with The LA Times and rocked this bright Alexander Wang sweater with a red M Missoni skirt (and a leopard print By Merline Berger coat, not pictured here).

This is definitely a pattern to keep an eye out for. It's a great way to transition into the new season, mixing up old winter sweaters with new chiffon and silk skirts for spring. Don't forget the color!

Are you feeling this trend? Do you think you can pull it off?
