HEALTHY MIND, HEALTHY BODY: Take Time for Yourself

I've somehow allowed myself to get swept into a whirlwind. My 9 to 5, blogging, social life, dating, and preparing for school has seriously burnt me out. I mean I-can't-keep-my-eyes-open-at-any-point in-the-day burnt out. I'm-so-cranky-I-could-kick-a-baby burnt out. My body is aching, my head is always pounding, and I'm taking out the frustration on people I care about. Eventually, enough has to be enough.

Talking to a friend last night about why I stopped going to the gym, I responded "I'm busy". That's usually my answer for everything. Too busy to cook proper, healthy meals. Too busy for the gym. Too busy to call my family.  Stop it. You are not busy. I need to learn to take time for myself and ignore the plethora of distractions set before me. Social media, smartphones, video chatting, texting, and television have become the norm. How could I possibly find time to sit and relax when there's so much happening in the world? If I'm not doing anything, I feel like I'm missing something.

The world will continue to move with or without you. Most likely the latter if you ignore your mental health.

Our bodies are engineered to send us signals when it is in distress. A twitching eye, frequent migraines, muscle spasms and irritability are signs that something is wrong. Take heed.

So what can you do to take time for yourself?
SIT. DOWN.

Relax. Don't think about work. Don't think about the multiple things you have to do. Sit on the couch, read a book, make a bracelet, knit a scarf. Just sit and be with yourself. Too "busy"? Take a walk instead of sitting with co-workers for lunch, don't talk on the phone while doing everything. I've started walking three subway stops away from my job and taking that time to just exist with myself. Once a month, I go alone to a local coffee shop to watch people perform poetry and sing songs, with my phone tucked in my bag and on silent. Take little nooks and crannies in your day, whether it's one hour a week or ten minutes a day.

SLOW DOWN. BE STILL.

Is anyone else feeling my pain? What are some of your tricks for catching little gems of solitude throughout the day?

LOOKBOOK: Maison Martin Margiela x H&M

If I had things my way, I'd be wearing slouchy, androgynous clothing for the rest of my life. These are the things that Maison Martin Margiela is made of - beautifully crafted, oversized garments that literally any person (or body form) can wear. Dropping off in H&M on November 15, this is a capsule collaboration at pure perfection. Margiela nails the true essence of H&M, the H&M I fell in love with back in year 2000. Its easy, effortless, and chic demeanor melds avant-garde and commercial fashion in a way that I've yet to see. I'm impressed and extremely excited for this collection.

As you peek through the lookbook, please notice the accessories. Gloves are doubling as purses, clutches look like oversized foil pop tart wrappers, statement necklaces make HUGE statements, gloves are handbag handles...there's all kinds of fun being had.

Styling tip: When I showed this collection to a friend earlier, she quickly wrote it off because it was all slouchy and shapeless. Literally ANY one can wear this silhouette (or lack thereof). Exaggerated bodies (ie: hourglass) tends to fill this silhouette out, while boxier shapes can belt looks to add curve. Shorter ladies can belt higher to elongate torso, so on and so forth. Don't be afraid to try new things.

OUTFIT: Girls (Date) Night Out

I don't think I've mentioned this before, but I'm newly single (and honestly not quite so ready to mingle yet). Something about being a Free Agent invokes a spirit of change from within that becomes so infectious that things that previously appeared so far-fetched snowball into seemingly feasible possibilities. One of those things? School. Another thing? Bro' Chillin'. Endless Bro' Chillin'.

Tineey, my girl Jessica, and I hung out in the park to get some work done for a beauty post. Afterwards, Tineey and I spent some quality time together over wine, curling irons, and online shopping. In between it all, we ventured around my favorite little nook of Harlem. This is one of our last free weekends before I start classes at FIT, bummer!

Honestly, as long as I have my friends, I will have Date Nights. I'm a lucky girl.

Shoes - Vintage Manolo Blahnik

HAIR: How to Style Box Braids

I've had my natural hair in protective styles since May; wigs and marley twists (remember my flat twist tutorial?) have shielded my tresses from direct sunlight, humidity, and my cotton pillowcases that I refuse to throw away (I'm a creature of habit, so sue me!).

The dimpled-beauty, Ms. Susy of African Creature, recently posted a video on Youtube that gives some easy visual instructions for styling box braids. She shared this video with me a couple of weeks ago on Facebook, and I haven't stopped watching it. The braider in me is dying for a set of box braids soon!

My favorite of the styles is #5, the Hairtie Ponytail. The knotted braids with the chic hump at the crown is a definite show-stopper!

Be sure to show Susy some love on Tumblr, Blogger, and Twitter. Thanks for sharing, Susy!

How have you been styling your box braids? Any other protective styles you've been doing?

HEALTHY MIND, HEALTHY BODY: Good Morning Sequence

Following me on Facebook? If so, I'll ever so often post some quick exercise routines you can do. Being a busy girl myself, I don't like to do routines that will drag into an two and three hours.

In comes the "Good Morning Yoga Sequence", a great set of stretches to get your body awake and ready to take on the day. Crafted by Jennifer Jarrett of MindBodyGreen. In total, this is supposed to take 10-15 minutes (about 90 seconds each pose, which a Downward Facing Dog in between each). Step-by-step instructions below:

1. Chest to Thighs with Interlaced Hands: Stand at the back of your yoga mat with your feet together and carefully bow forward, hinging from your hips and not your low back. Reach your hands behind your back and interlace your fingers, pressing the palms together. Bend your knees and press your chest into and down your thighs, keeping your neck long. Hold for five breaths.

2. Sundial Salutation: With feet hip-distance apart, fold forward and place your hands on your elbows. Bring your torso toward the outside of the right leg and open your chest so that your left elbow points up toward the sky. Moving like a sundial, lead with your left elbow and slowly come up the right side, reaching up at the top and then continue to lower down the left side, keeping the chest open and the shoulders down. Repeat 3 times on each side.

3. Open Hip: From Downward Facing Dog lift your right leg all the way up to the sky behind you. Keeping the arms very strong, bend your right knee and stack your right hip over your left, opening up the hip, groin and thigh. Gently press the left heel down into the earth, being mindful to keep that heel from splaying out to the side.

4. Easy Lunge Twist: Step your right foot to the outside of your right hand so that your right foot is closer to the right edge of the mat. Turn your toes out to a 45 degree angle (like 10:00). Keep the left knee lifted and press the thigh up towards the sky. Press down into the earth with the left hand and open the right arm up towards the sky. Stay here for at least five breaths.

5. Low Lunge Variation: With your right toes pointing straight ahead and the outer edge of the right foot parallel to the outer edge of the mat, lower your left knee down to the earth. Place your hands on top of your right thigh or reach them up to the sky. Soften the tailbone down and draw the low belly off of the thigh. Stay here for five breaths allowing the right heel to energetically draw back and the left hip to energetically move down and forward towards the right heel.

6. Triangle Pose: Tuck the back toes under and spin the left heel down so that the heels are more or less in line with each other. Pressing down through the outer edge of the left foot, begin to straighten your right leg. Engage both legs and consider stacking your left hip over your right. Slide your right hand as far up your right leg as you need to so that you are not collapsing anywhere. Open the left arm up towards the sky, reaching out through the left fingertips.

7. Forearm Plank: With toes tucked, lower down onto your elbows and forearms. Keeping the hips in line with the shoulders and your knees off of the ground, stack your shoulders over your elbows, which should be no wider than shoulders distance apart. Keep the back of the thighs pressing up towards the sky, while guiding the heels back and the heart forward. Maintain a strong core and hold here for 30 seconds.

8. Malasana - Yogi Squat:Separate your feet a little bit further apart, maybe even as wide as your mat. Turn your toes out slightly. Bend your knees and lower your hips down towards the earth. Bring your hands to prayer in front of your heart and allow the elbows to gently guide the knees and thighs open, keeping length in the spine. Engage mula bandha to experience a greater sense of lightness.Stay here for at least five full breaths.

What is your AM routine? Has stretching helped you wake up? Are you more productive? Sound off!

OUTFIT: 17 Sundays x Plus Model Mag

Something is in the air - it may be the weather, but I am always tired. As I always say, my mood is reflected in my wardrobe, so I've been sticking to black. Tineey pulled me out of my cave, so I threw this on to go grab a coffee and head over to a Plus Model Magazine party with her and Kellie

I'm absolutely smitten with this Too Puzzled Razor Shirt from 17 Sundays. It's just long enough to wear with a short skirt, but can dressed down with a pair of skinnies and knee-high boots. It's great to layer as well. I threw on a motorcycle that I found at a thrift store (that I then Instagrammed because I couldn't believe it was in my possession haha), which played major defense against the little bit of chill that was going down.

Styling Tip: Bodycon skirts are a curvy girl's best friend! They can be paired with any top, literally. For a casual look, throw on an oversized knit sweater and boots. Night on the town? Pair with a flouncy chiffon blouse and heels. Voila, magic.

Pardon the wind in my collar, ha!

I had the pleasure of viewing the 17 Sundays collection during FFFWeek earlier this year and I was so impressed by them. They nail "relaxed, wearable chic" - all my style for this Fall. Because of my current state of tire, I just want to be comfortable and ready-to-wear.

Am I always on the phone? Smh.

After coffee, Tineey and I headed over to Chelsea Manor for the Plus Model Magazine Celebration of their "Love Your Body" issue, which is wildly successful (EIC Madeline Figueroa Jones, cover model Ivory Kalber, and editorial model Laura Johnson will be on Good Morning America today at 8:14 AM!). Speaking of Madeline...

DESIGNER TO WATCH: Rachael Sansom

It's really mind boggling some of the amazing fashion you see just traipsing around New York City. During NYFW, right outside of the Gen Art show I attended, I was walking to catch a cab and stopped dead in my tracks as I watched this young woman walk across the street. I had no choice but to stop her and ask who she was wearing.

Alexandra Thurmon, a friend of Rachael Sansom's, wore this dress impeccably with a pair of purple pumps. The kick of this A-Line dress can easily flatter any shape (personally, I'd belt this look - you know that's my "thing").

Rachael Sansom recently received her BFA in Fashion and Textile Design from the Academy of Art University and debuted her designs earlier this year for the likes of Sarah Burton, Creative Director for Alexander McQueen, and renowned milliner Philip Treacy. Sansom collaborated with fellow designer Chelsea Levinson, who created the knitwear that was incorporated into each look pictured above.

Rachael says she pulled her inspiration from the paintings of David Hockney, which project his interpretation of Los Angeles in the '60s and '70s.

It's almost ridiculous how my knees buckle for graphic prints and textiles, and in colors this vibrant Sansom is making the statement of a lifetime. Ease of wear, a mixture of fabrics, and neon hues make this collection unstoppable. Rachael has received a scholarship to study at L'Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture and is currently in Paris chasing her dream. I wish her all the best, and I look forward to seeing so much more of what she has to offer.

To see more of Rachael Sansom, check out her portfolio and her website.

TREND REPORT: Intarsia Animal Sweater

Cold weather means major chunky knit time. Sweaters get fancy this fall with friendly critters who can be dressed up with tapered pants or dressed down with dark denim.

Before you ask: "Intarsia" is a knitting technique used to create patterns with different colors. Unlike most knitting projects, colors are not carried over. Instead, they are cut off and stitched together when all the knitting is done. Lesson dismissed, haha.

Styling Tip: Accessories are key when wearing knit sweaters. Drape with pearls or a colorful statement necklace for a day-to-night look, heels to look put-together, and metallics to look high-fashion chic. My favorite thing to do is wear a big men's watch with a knit.

Have you indulged in this trend yet?

BEAUTY: Dripping Blood Manicure

This year is flying by so fast! Can you believe it's already October? The chills have finally gotten comfortable here, which means apple picking, pumpkin patches, and Halloweeeen. I already have my costume ready to go (what can I say? I like to plan ahead!), but wanted to share my tutorial for the Dripping Blood Manicure which has most recently graced the runway during NYFW at the Prabal Gurung SS 2013 show.

For this mani, I used:

Step 1: Paint your base color. There's tons of variations for this manicure. Most use a french manicure base. I opted for a black matte (LA Colors + butterLONDON matte topcoat)

Step 2: Paint a French Manicure tip. I used a bright red from Kleancolor. You can be as neat or sloppy as you want to be. I personally went with the careless route and it's totally fine!

Step 3: Dip your instrument in the polish. Drop a dot arbitrarily on your nail.

Step 4: Drop another dot on your nail and drag up to the french manicure line. You can squiggle these lines, zig-zag, whatever. The grosser, the better.

All done!

Check out my video tutorial below:

OUTFIT: Vintage Harlem

If you know me personally, you know I live and breathe Harlem. I've gone to school there my entire life, I work there, I eat there...so I couldn't miss the chance to boogie and shop when Kellie invited me to the Sweet Spot Festival. Good eats, good music, good folks and an amazing vintage market. I figured I'd follow suit and don this vintage dress that came in from eBay.

I met some really great designers and new food ventures that I will probably share with you later - one of which was an amazing young woman that made jewelry out of batik fabrics.

If you're in Harlem on October 28th, come out to the Sweet Spot Festival at Jackie Robinson Park. It's a guaranteed good time. (If you're coming, seriously, let me know!)

Outfit Deets:
Dress - Vintage
Booties - a gift from Stephanie (who is in this post)
Purse - Vintage Dooney & Bourke
Gold Cuff - Vintage

BEAUTY: Fall Red Lipstick Favorites

Every classy lady has red lipstick in her beauty arsenal. Whether you realize it or not, not every Red is made for every season. Once you have a good understanding of undertones, transitioning is a no-brainer. Just think of it this way:

Blue undertones are for cooler months (think berries), Red undertones are for warmer months (think red peppers). Hot and cold - simple enough.

For this fall, I've become totally smitten with oxblood and wine colored lips. Deep reds bring a certain heaviness to an outfit which is perfect for those funky September/October it's-still-hot-during-the-day-but-I-need-a-jacket-at-night days, where you want to wear lighter colors and materials but still want to pay homage to the equinox. My top picks:

In this photo with Kellie B. we're going full twinsies with red lips (like I said, every lady needs it). I'm wearing an immaculate lip gloss from Best Face Forward Make-Up Studio NYC in "BFF Signature Lips". As I'm very particular about my lipglosses that I usually don't wear because I don't like stickiness, I speak confidently. It is chock full of Vitamin E which both soothes and heals chapped lips, and the deep red color is very, very, very saturated. I had a mango ice pop, shopped vintage racks, danced in the park, and only had to re-apply after having sipped a salted caramel mocha latte hours later.

What are some of your favorite red lipstick picks for this Fall?
